Voiceovers and the internet

mixer desk fadersThe internet is such an amazing invention – and I’m very grateful that is there. Here’s why: Before becoming a voice artist I worked in radio. When I first started at a local radio station audio was recorded onto tape on big Studer open reel machines and Voiceover artists were strange creatures who drove around the country going from radio station to radio station to production studio recording commercials. They used to come into reception (radio stations had receptionists in those days) and then disappear off into the production studio. Shortly afterwards they’d emerge to hit the road to the next gig.

I have to admit it wasn’t a way of earning a living that I seriously considered, so in a way its a surprise to me to discover that I’ve ended up as a Voiceover. But if I have then its really because of the internet. I don’t do radio ads very often anyway but when I do they are mostly for radio stations in the United Arab Emirates. Also although I do travel to studios in London and elsewhere to record voiceovers I actually do most of my work in my own studio. And its work that I get through my website. If the internet wasn’t there I wouldn’t have a business!

I was reminded of this fact this week when in the space of three days I recorded 3 VO jobs for a production company in Leipzig in Germany, did 2 short internet news voiceovers for a production company in Amsterdam and another longer narration for another company in the Netherlands. Later on I linked up via ISDN to do a radio ad in the UAE.

In the old days I’d have been driving around the country trying to scrape a living doing radio ads and the occasional corporate – now I can stay in my own studio and work on ads, narrations, corporate videos and documentaries with people and companies all over the world. All thanks to the idea of Tim Berners Lee who pretty much invented the internet. Thanks Tim!
