VO for No More Limits

In October I was asked to record a voice over for film maker Gareth Lang. At the time the project was described to me as piece of work for a post graduate qualification.  I was interested in the project, called “No More Limits”, precisely because it was different from the usual voice over narrations for corporate videos that I spend most of my time producing. Also it was short so I didn’t think it would take a lot of work.

I asked Gareth from some direction for style and delivery and he sent me a link to a video which contained the kind of voice over he wanted. Initially he wanted a British voice but as the reference VO sounded American I asked Gareth if he’d like me to demo something along those lines too.

In the event he liked my voice over with a hint of the US about it. However it took several more attempts to nail the actual style and delivery for the final take. Not quite the quick job I imagined.
The final version of the voiceover is much softer than my earlier attempts. It benefits from the clarity and also some of the proximity effect on my trusty Neumann U87.
Having now seen the final version I’m pleased I persevered with delivering the extra takes.

Now Gareth tells me he’s entered the video for a Sony Professional competition. How well it does in the first round depends on the number of “likes” it gets before 15 November – so watch the video here and give it a thumbs up with a “like” to help his chances.

Gareth also does some corporate video work too – check out his website at garethlang.co.uk
