Blog

When part of your work is recording corporate and explainer video voiceovers you can discover quite a range of things  you previously had no idea existed.

For example non slip tennis courts; a special plastic used in photovoltaic cells; an iphone app that controls wood burning stoves; how to decommission wind turbines; a machine that measures human body resonant frequencies; how to turn a conservatory into an extra room; a water distribution and sewerage company in the desert in the UAE and finding out how to drive fancy VW cars over rocky terrain – you name it I’ve done the voice over!.

I hope these blog posts give a flavour of the more interesting voiceover stuff that sometimes comes my way – plus some of the other things I like that I’ve come across in those moments when I’m waiting for the next script to arrive!

Covid isolation over – back to the booth

 January 24, 2022
I posted last week that I was isolating due to testing positive for Covid.  I detailed the delights of the symptoms in that post so don’t need to go over that here. Suffice it to say that isolation took longer than I had hoped to get to the two days of consecutive negative tests.  I had hoped to be free on Sunday but in actual fact it wasn’t until today read more

Back to normal? Not quite..

 January 20, 2022
When you work in voice overs, or any kind of voice work throat infections and colds are occupational hazards to be avoided if you can. Most years I seem to get a bad cold every winter – and more than one when my children were young – each new school term would bring a new set of germs home, When I originally started this post on Tuesday of this week read more

Voiceovers – what’s room tone?

 January 14, 2022
When I began my voice over journey it seemed like having a “nice voice” would take you quite a long way. You also didn’t need to know much about marketing or to have the skills of an audio producer or recording engineer. Back then I did not have my own studio so when I did directed sessions I either went to the studio of the client or the one they read more

Voice artists need to build a client base

 December 21, 2021
Right from the first Covid lockdown there has been a massive influx of people into the voice industry: setting themselves up as voice over artists.   Actors with no work because of Covid. Former radio presenters let go due to increased radio networking. Plus those who have been told they have a “nice voice” and who seem to think that with a laptop and a USB podcaster mic they are good read more

Voice overs – don’t forget the basics

 November 22, 2021
During a recent voice over recording session something happened  that served to remind me that even experienced people sometimes forget basic stuff that they really should not. I was in my voice over booth for a Source Connect directed session with a production studio in Leeds to record an on-line commercial.  So far so straight forward.  I think it was because this kind of scenario is so routine and familiar read more

Bells

A niche radio feature

 October 25, 2021
One feature on BBC Radio 4 that has intrigued me for a while is Bells on Sunday  It’s one of those public service broadcast things the BBC do that are – to my mind – incredibly niche in terms of their interest but, I imagine, somehow help to fulfil a remit of providing something for everybody.  Basically its a weekly broadcast of church bell changes being rung from locations across the read more

DAB Radio

RAJARs are back

 October 20, 2021
When you work in radio, as I did for a couple of decades, you get used to the quarterly rhythm – with all its attendant stress and concern – of the publication of RAJARs (Radio Joint Audience Research) – or listening figures. The future careers of on-air colleagues could be riding on them especially if a presenter had a couple of “bad books”. Traditionally the figures are compiled from “field read more

On-line video voice over narration

 October 11, 2021
I like to display lots of examples of my work on my website. From time to time I spend a few hours researching on-line to find new examples that I can use to update my demo page. So here is a video I’ve just come across that I recorded the voice over narration for a short while ago and which I did not have access to until now. The video read more

Varied work in the voice-over booth

 September 21, 2021
I’ve had quite a busy time in my voice over booth since people came back from their holidays at the end of the summer – whether staycation or something more exotic.  To me September always has that “back to school start of a new term” feel . Clearly quite a lot of others have been getting back to something a bit closer to “normal” too. So it’s nice to be read more

Good script writing for voice overs

 September 1, 2021
I’ve just come across a blog post on Linked-In from voice artist Moira Tait that deals with one of those issues that frustrate many voice artists: the content of the scripts you get sent from the client and why it’s often so hard to read. In her blog post Moira has a client sending off the script that they are pretty pleased with but then instead of getting an audio read more
