Drains are bad for voiceovers

dvoicebox Speaker One imageLife is a bit more difficult than usual in the dVoiceBox voiceover studio and it’s all to do with drains. More accurately it’s to do with the installation of drains.

About a year ago I did a voiceover for my local water company : Severn Trent. Now it feels like they are repaying the favour with some “investment in infrastructure”.  This means they are currently replacing the old Victorian era drains in my part of Leamington with a new super, massive, 21st century drain.  The idea is to make flooding much less likely in this old part of town.  Obviously I’m in favour of flood alleviation – what I’m not so pleased about is massive excavating machinery they have installed to dig up the street almost outside my studio.

My Esmono booth is usually fabulously quiet – you can’t hear any traffic noise – it’s totally silent. Normally. But not this week – not only can I hear the low end rumble from the massive machinery when I’m in the booth but I can feel it through my feet too!  In fact last week the glass of water on the table in the booth was rippling and shaking during a particularly noisy episode. In fact the whole building was vibrating and shaking – I have to remind myself that it’s stood for 140 years so it’ll probably withstand the onslaught.

At least the guys doing the digging seem to knock off relatively early so I can at least get some recording done every day. However when you pride yourself on turning jobs around quickly for clients its frustrating to have to wait until 4.00 pm before you can even get in front of the mic.
