Blog

When part of your work is recording corporate and explainer video voiceovers you can discover quite a range of things  you previously had no idea existed.

For example non slip tennis courts; a special plastic used in photovoltaic cells; an iphone app that controls wood burning stoves; how to decommission wind turbines; a machine that measures human body resonant frequencies; how to turn a conservatory into an extra room; a water distribution and sewerage company in the desert in the UAE and finding out how to drive fancy VW cars over rocky terrain – you name it I’ve done the voice over!.

I hope these blog posts give a flavour of the more interesting voiceover stuff that sometimes comes my way – plus some of the other things I like that I’ve come across in those moments when I’m waiting for the next script to arrive!

Voiceover artists and on-line gaming

Voiceover artists and on-line gaming

 October 27, 2011
I must admit when I think about games on computers and on-line I tend to assume that they mostly fall into similar categories with plenty of fighting, war imagery, violence and sexual imagery. If, like me, you’re a parent of younger children, some, if not most, of these games just don’t seem appropriate for young kids. After all they’ve got the rest of their life to be visually assaulted by, read more

Flagstones, paving slabs and a new voiceover

Flagstones, paving slabs and a new voiceover

 October 24, 2011
I’ve just been recording some new voiceovers for Stonemarket. Stonemarket – New Products for 2012 I’ve done a few VOs for this company now. Starting to feel quite informed about flagstones and paving! I supposed it might help if I ever get round to sorting out the paths and terraces in my back garden. At least I’ll know how the paving is produced and where it comes from. The video read more

Voiceovers, radio and lost creativity

Voiceovers, radio and lost creativity

 October 21, 2011
I came across this blog this week called Radio and the Creative Abyss written by John at JMS.  It struck a chord with me as he bemoans the lack of originality and creativity in radio commercials.  As it happens I rarely voice commercials for UK radio but I was a radio presenter for more than 20 years and know where John is coming from.  John reckons its all about money read more

Music in unusual places can make you smile

Music in unusual places can make you smile

 October 10, 2011
As well as being a voice over artist I also have a background in music both performance and some composition for TV.  I like all kinds of music  and I love anything that might help to bring music to a wider audience. And if it puts a smile on your face so much the better. I’m a big fan of american flash mob crew Improv Everywhere. This isn’t them but read more

Voiceovers and the “magic” of ISDN

Voiceovers and the “magic” of ISDN

 October 8, 2011
In these days of VOIP, Skype and increasingly super fast broadband (at least in some parts of the country) there is something that often mystifies new comers to the world of voiceover – why does everyone who’s serious about it seem to have an ISDN connection? Why do we still have a tool of the trade that is basically two copper phone lines bundled together and that gives you a read more

Voiceovers and the internet

Voiceovers and the internet

 September 20, 2011
The internet is such an amazing invention – and I’m very grateful that is there. Here’s why: Before becoming a voice artist I worked in radio. When I first started at a local radio station audio was recorded onto tape on big Studer open reel machines and Voiceover artists were strange creatures who drove around the country going from radio station to radio station to production studio recording commercials. They read more

Volkswagen Radio ad and the need for flexibility

Volkswagen Radio ad and the need for flexibility

 August 28, 2011
I try to have a flexible approach to voice over sessions – and sometimes you really need it. I recently recorded a radio ad for Volkswagen in the UAE. Part of the flexible approach means working sometimes on Sundays (because it seems they don’t have Sunday’s off in that part of the world). So on the Sunday in question I thought I’d been booked, as the script said, to be read more

Manchester Uni launches new online dentistry qualification

Manchester Uni launches new online dentistry qualification

 July 30, 2011
I’ve just recorded a voiceover for Smile-on to promote a new Msc for Dental practitioners. Seems like a great new way for dentists to get higher qualifications – without having to stop work to study.  Most of the new course is delivered via on-line webinars and interactive content. In addition throughout the 2 year course there are several days of “hands on” practical work. It means you can get a read more

New information video for AB World Foods

New information video for AB World Foods

 July 10, 2011
I’ve just recorded the narration for a new video covering Health and Safety for outside contractors working at AB World Foods.  Its amazing – and probably quite reassuring – how stringent the rules are on what you can and can’t  do when you’re working in a food processing factory. Safety boots at all times and no tools with wooden handles! The video is being produced by Bretby Media. read more

Samsung radio ads

Samsung radio ads

 July 10, 2011
I’ve just hooked up with BKP in Dubai for an ISDN session. We’ve  recorded a series of 5 30 sec radio ads for Samsung. The commercials will be broadcast on radio stations in the UAE. read more
