Blog

When part of your work is recording corporate and explainer video voiceovers you can discover quite a range of things  you previously had no idea existed.

For example non slip tennis courts; a special plastic used in photovoltaic cells; an iphone app that controls wood burning stoves; how to decommission wind turbines; a machine that measures human body resonant frequencies; how to turn a conservatory into an extra room; a water distribution and sewerage company in the desert in the UAE and finding out how to drive fancy VW cars over rocky terrain – you name it I’ve done the voice over!.

I hope these blog posts give a flavour of the more interesting voiceover stuff that sometimes comes my way – plus some of the other things I like that I’ve come across in those moments when I’m waiting for the next script to arrive!

The voiceover link to Planet Rock – and a miscast voice on a car ad

“Who is the voice-over on Planet Rock?”  Its one of the regular questions that I’ve noticed keeps coming up in the key word search terms section of my Google analytics for this website. Well the first thing to say is it’s not me!  Google searches probably show you my site because I’m a voiceover  artist – and because I mention on the website that I used to be a presenter read more

Voiceovers reading short scripts need direction

Voiceovers reading short scripts need direction

I recently completed two voiceover jobs within a day of each other that were so contrastingly different they seemed to sum up the range of work I often seem to get. Firstly I recorded the voiceover for a health and safety training video for external contractors working in factories supplying Asda. The script was quite long – several thousand words and running to several pages of script.  Just as I read more

MVO with outdoor theme – again

MVO with outdoor theme – again

I’ve just been amending for the client some of the audio I recorded a while ago for an elearning project on fence panels. More specifically on how to correctly prepare the display in the DIY store when you’re selling fencing panels. As you can imagine there’s a fair bit on Health and Safety. Some people seem to think the whole Health and Safety culture has gone too far – but read more

Voiceover for energy company

Voiceover for energy company

 November 28, 2011
I’ve just recorded a voiceover for an energy company that has recently built a new style of drilling platform which will now allow them to explore for gas in parts of the North Sea that hitherto had been considered uneconomic.  This new re-usable platform was designed and built in less than 2 years – which apparently is a very impressive timescale for this kind of equipment. The voice-over is for read more

Here’s another project on my list of useful things I never knew before I started working as a voiceover artist. I’ve been providing the voice narration for a series of short instructional films explaining the use of Reflok tools when you’re making pipework connections. It’s fair to say that, although I’ve described the processes involved, and how to use the tools effectively, since I’ve not seen the visuals, I can’t read more

The voiceover link between Blackadder and X-Factor

A friend of mine has recently got the boxed set of Blackadder and we’ve been reliving this Rowan Atkinson classic. We’ve just got to the end of the first series – its the one set in mediaeval times (and actually the least funny). We were watching the final episode (The Black Seal) where towards the end a character called the Duke of Burgundy – The Hawk joins the action. The read more

E-learning VO continues outdoor theme

I recently provided some narration for Stonemarket.  It was a voiceover for an on-line and DVD video describing all their new garden landscaping products for 2012. Lots of description of paving stones, flag stones and edging designed to make your garden look really smart. Now the outdoor theme continues this week where I’ve been providing a voice-over that’s to do with fencing! Though in fairness I’m actually providing instructions in read more

I’ve just been recording dialogue for a new elearning project to be used to train staff who work for Disney in the UK. The project is explaining the appropriate working practices to be followed in order to be compliant with the Anti Bribery Act. I was working with American female voice artist Maxine Dunn read more

Why voiceover artists need good ears

Why voiceover artists need good ears

 October 29, 2011
I’ve just come across an interesting post from American VO artist and voice coach Terry Daniels. I liked it because it’s all about the importance of listening. In a industry where we work with our voice all the time its amazing how as voice over artists we sometimes forget how important using our ears is. Terry makes the point that it’s really crucial to listen to what the clients wants read more
