Chris Radley – Voice Over Blog

When part of your work is recording corporate and explainer video voiceovers you can discover quite a range of things  you previously had no idea existed.

For example non slip tennis courts; a special plastic used in photovoltaic cells; an iphone app that controls wood burning stoves; how to decommission wind turbines; a machine that measures human body resonant frequencies; how to turn a conservatory into an extra room; a water distribution and sewerage company in the desert in the UAE and finding out how to drive fancy VW cars over rocky terrain – you name it I’ve done the voice over!.

I hope these blog posts give a flavour of the more interesting voiceover stuff that sometimes comes my way – plus some of the other things I like that I’ve come across in those moments when I’m waiting for the next script to arrive!

More radio ad voiceovers

More radio ad voiceovers

More ads for radio I’ve just been providing voiceovers for a few radio ads today. One ad voiceover was for a UK window company advertising on an English language radio station in Tenerife: new doors and windows for the Brit Ex-pat community. I guess it shows how much we’re part of Europe whether we want to be or not – the copy in the script directed people to the Meridian read more

VO for DIY wood retailer I’ve just recorded the first part of a voiceover for a training programme for staff who work for B&Q. The voiceover is part of a project to explain B&Q’s Forest Friendly project and in particular their “chain of custody”. The voiceover script I followed explains that is is a process whereby B&Q can trace wood in their products right the way from the store through read more

Do Voiceover artists need a Neumann Mic? (Part One)

Do Voiceover artists need a Neumann Mic? (Part One)

 May 1, 2012
Do VOs really need a U87? What’s the best mic for a voiceover artist?  Lots of people reckon that when it comes to VO work and spoken word projects the name in mics to choose is Neumann .  Specifically many point to the Neumann U87 as the big daddy of voice mics. It’s certainly the daddy price wise that’s for sure!  In reality the “right” mic depends on the voice read more

Phone prompt voiceovers and VO narration

Phone prompt voiceovers and VO narration

 May 1, 2012
Recent VO work I’ve recently recorded phone prompts of the “sorry we’re not here – try later” variety for the RAC. Plus I’ve also just provided further voiceover narration for an ongoing staff training project for a pharmaceutical company. I’ve also got quite a big project lined up with DDE – a charity that campaigns against drinking and driving. In fact it’s a remake of a project I first recorded read more

Further voiceover variety

Further voiceover variety

More voiceover variety I’ve had a series of busy voiceover sessions in the dvoicebox studio – I’ve been recording amends to a voiceover narration I recently recorded for a financial sector personnel recruitment firm. Plus I’ve just delivered voiceover recordings for a staff training programme for a pharmaceutical company. I’m also becoming a bit of expert on Health and Safety in the workplace: I’ve recorded the first two of nine read more

VO for on-line tachograph explainer video I’ve just provided a voice-over narration for a video project promoting a new, internet based control and monitoring system for transport companies that use tachographs. The Smartanalysis system offers an easy to use interface and helps to ensure that drivers do not exceed their statutory time limits. Turns out it quite important to be compliant as you could lose your licence or even go read more

Voiceover for presentation to help voluntary clubs with their accounts

VO on financial planning I’ve just delivered the audio for a voiceover programme designed to help people who run things like sporting clubs make sense of their accounting requirements. It seems that many people who run voluntary clubs find it difficult to keep on top of the accounting and financial planning needed to make sure the club is a success.  The programme I’ve just voiced is designed for people with read more

New microphone for VO I’ve been recording a voiceover for a a video explaining how actuators made by Rotork can be adjusted and calibrated to work on valves in a variety of situations. Not only did I learn a load more about how to operate actuators (I knew a bit already as I’ve done VO’s for this company before) but I was also able to use my brand new studio read more

New voiceover for elearning training course

E-learning VO and a new mic I’ve just delivered the audio for an elearning voiceover for Disney.  It’s part of a programme of training for their UK based staff in the standards of conduct they need to use when dealing with customers and other businesses. The only disappointment for me was that I got the job finished before my new microphone arrived. I’ve just made the leap into “mic-as- investment-territory” read more

Corporate voiceover linking tomatoes to rockwool!

Corporate voiceover linking tomatoes to rockwool!

 March 28, 2012
Narration for hydroponic grown tomatoes I’ve just recorded a corporate voiceover explaining the sustainable cultivation processes used by growers of tomatoes in the Netherlands. It seems these days they don’t use soil in their greenhouses – instead tomatoes are grown in “stone wool” – a spun mineral product made from volcanic basalt. Growers prefer it as a growth and cultivation medium it because it allows much greater control of the read more
