Blog

When part of your work is recording corporate and explainer video voiceovers you can discover quite a range of things  you previously had no idea existed.

For example non slip tennis courts; a special plastic used in photovoltaic cells; an iphone app that controls wood burning stoves; how to decommission wind turbines; a machine that measures human body resonant frequencies; how to turn a conservatory into an extra room; a water distribution and sewerage company in the desert in the UAE and finding out how to drive fancy VW cars over rocky terrain – you name it I’ve done the voice over!.

I hope these blog posts give a flavour of the more interesting voiceover stuff that sometimes comes my way – plus some of the other things I like that I’ve come across in those moments when I’m waiting for the next script to arrive!

Radio sale provokes nostalgia

Radio sale provokes nostalgia

 July 12, 2012
I’ve been sent a link to the on-line auction of assets from the recently vacated Bush House.  I’ve never worked for the Beeb – though I have a number of friends who have – but it was interesting to see just what is for sale. There were pangs of nostalgia for me as they seem to be selling loads of the kind of equipment I first encountered when I started read more

I’ve been busy recording the voice over for a project training staff who work in Specsavers stores.  In fact I’ve recently provided voiceovers for quite a lot of elearning projects for staff in a range of industries and companies. You certainly get quite an insight into the way companies work – or at least the way they and their employees are supposed to work.  Some of the projects have surprised read more

I’ve been learning about the importance of effective crisis management for big companies while recording a voiceover for Unilever.  Companies have had strategies on how to deal with crises for sometime now – but in a world interconnected by social media platforms companies now need to move fast to contain an issue before it potentially damages their brand.  The need for fast action when dealing with social media has resulted read more

I’ve just sent the audio files of my recording of an information voiceover for an international brewing company. It seems that they have worked out how to change their beer production systems so that they lose less of the brew through evaporation.  As my voiceover explains – Now they get to save energy by having less evaporation – but without compromising the flavour of the beer. So that’s good news read more

I’ve been pretty busy in the dVoicebox studio with plenty of voiceover recording plus much editing to produce finished audio for a range of clients.  I’ve just been revisiting a voiceover project I first recorded last year – providing a voiceover narration explaining about a substance used to treat cancer patients. Another of my recent voiceover jobs was for an elearning project for staff working at Waitrose – training them read more

More radio ad voiceovers

More radio ad voiceovers

 May 11, 2012
I’ve just been providing voiceovers for a few radio ads today. One ad voiceover was for a UK window company advertising on an English language radio station in Tenerife: new doors and windows for the Brit Ex-pat community. I guess it shows how much we’re part of Europe whether we want to be or not – the copy in the script directed people to the Meridian store by telling them read more

I’ve just recorded the first part of a voiceover for a training programme for staff who work for B&Q. The voiceover is part of a project to explain B&Q’s Forest Friendly project and in particular their “chain of custody”. The voiceover script I followed explains that is is a process whereby B&Q can trace wood in their products right the way from the store through the production and manufacture process read more

Do Voiceover artists need a Neumann Mic? (Part One)

Do Voiceover artists need a Neumann Mic? (Part One)

 May 1, 2012
What’s the best mic for a voiceover artist?  Lots of people reckon that when it comes to VO work and spoken word projects the name in mics to choose is Neumann .  Specifically many point to the Neumann U87 as the big daddy of voice mics. It’s certainly the daddy price wise that’s for sure!  In reality the “right” mic depends on the voice and most importantly how it sounds read more

Voiceover for presentation to help voluntary clubs with their accounts

Voiceover for presentation to help voluntary clubs with their accounts

 April 12, 2012
I’ve just delivered the audio for a voiceover programme designed to help people who run things like sporting clubs make sense of their accounting requirements. It seems that many people who run voluntary clubs find it difficult to keep on top of the accounting and financial planning needed to make sure the club is a success.  The programme I’ve just voiced is designed for people with no previous accounting or read more

I’ve been recording a voiceover for a a video explaining how actuators made by Rotork can be adjusted and calibrated to work on valves in a variety of situations. Not only did I learn a load more about how to operate actuators (I knew a bit already as I’ve done VO’s for this company before) but I was also able to use my brand new studio mic: my first session read more
