Blog

When part of your work is recording corporate and explainer video voiceovers you can discover quite a range of things  you previously had no idea existed.

For example non slip tennis courts; a special plastic used in photovoltaic cells; an iphone app that controls wood burning stoves; how to decommission wind turbines; a machine that measures human body resonant frequencies; how to turn a conservatory into an extra room; a water distribution and sewerage company in the desert in the UAE and finding out how to drive fancy VW cars over rocky terrain – you name it I’ve done the voice over!.

I hope these blog posts give a flavour of the more interesting voiceover stuff that sometimes comes my way – plus some of the other things I like that I’ve come across in those moments when I’m waiting for the next script to arrive!

New Year New Voiceovers

New Year New Voiceovers

 January 10, 2013
Well the year has got off to a busy start with plenty of recording in the dVoiceBox voiceover recording studio. I’ve already recorded a voiceover narration for a video explaining the services available on the De Kleef industrial estate in Arnhem in the Netherlands. I’ve also just recorded a voiceover explaining the use of the Vapor Ricon wheelchair lift on vehicles. In addition I’ve provided the voiceover narration for 4 read more

I’ve been interested in radio for a long time. As a young lad I listened to Radio 1 but as a teenager I found Radio Caroline (Mi Amigo era) and listened to that obsessively. They played the rock music records I was into – but they were playing them on a ship in the North Sea – how cool was that? I loved the way the guys on the station read more

I recently provided the voiceover narration for a corporate video for Knight Knox International. This is the first of a series of videos to explain the different corporate aspects of this property investment company. I’m just about to start recording the second in the series. The video has been produced by Callum Whiteley at Skewiff and has just been placed on-line. read more

I’ve been providing voiceovers for a wide variety of corporate projects recently.  One that was especially interesting to me was for Magma Structures. I found it fascinating because it was an area that I previously knew nothing about.  My voiceover narration was for an on-line video to promote the work of this company that make carbon fibre structures. They’ve created art and architecture projects out of this incredibly strong versatile read more

I’ve mentioned before the difference in culture between doing voice work in the US and here in the UK. One key thing is that training and mentoring seems to be given much more importance for voice artists in the States. It’s something that people do throughout their career as they try to learn new techniques that make their voiceovers more effective. Although we don’t seem to have that kind of read more

I recently provided a voiceover narration to a video demonstrating the new garden landscape products available for 2013 from Stonemarket. The company produce paving for gardens, patios and driveways using a range of real, quarried stone paving and also manufacture slabs and paviors made from reconstituted stone. This is the third time I’ve been asked to narrate their annual new products video. The video is now on the Voiceovers page read more

American voice artists seem to have a different approach to voiceover work when compared with voice talent in the UK. For a start US VOs seem much more likely to believe in the importance of regularly attending voice training sessions throughout their career. Often it seems that they will have a mentor to help them develop further too.  In addition quite a number seem to offer voice training themselves to read more

It’s been a busy couple of weeks in my voice-over studio with VO projects ranging from radio ads, to video narrations and training projects. I recently completed the voiceover and editing for a training project for AT&T in the US. It was a training programme explaining how their remuneration policies operate in their various branches around the world. From providing a voiceover for a company on the other side of read more

Recently I provided the first voiceover narration for a series of on-line videos for Click Travel – promoting their management system for business travel expenses including for tickets for trains, taxis and, of course,  flights. Now the travel theme continues this week as I’ve just voiced a radio ad for Etihad. It’s been a while since I did a voiceover for them so it was nice to be back promoting read more

Time runs out for famous voiceover

Time runs out for famous voiceover

I’m always interested in people who work with their voice or in voiceovers and so an obituary this week caught my eye. It was for a man who worked as a voice actor and had provided a voiceover that was at once familiar to millions while he himself would have remained virtually unknown. This was Brian Cobby, the voice actor who died this week aged 83. His voice career had read more
