Blog

When part of your work is recording corporate and explainer video voiceovers you can discover quite a range of things  you previously had no idea existed.

For example non slip tennis courts; a special plastic used in photovoltaic cells; an iphone app that controls wood burning stoves; how to decommission wind turbines; a machine that measures human body resonant frequencies; how to turn a conservatory into an extra room; a water distribution and sewerage company in the desert in the UAE and finding out how to drive fancy VW cars over rocky terrain – you name it I’ve done the voice over!.

I hope these blog posts give a flavour of the more interesting voiceover stuff that sometimes comes my way – plus some of the other things I like that I’ve come across in those moments when I’m waiting for the next script to arrive!

Here’s the video Or you can see the video and hear my voiceover on the read more

Voiceover narration for milkmen (and women)

Voiceover narration for milkmen (and women)

In the course of the last couple of years I seem to have ended up providing quite a few voiceover narrations or Health and Safety videos and training programmes. I now know quite a bit more than I really need to about safely working at heights and not using ladders (unless you’re desperate) in industrial environments. I’m pretty familiar with the procedures for outside contractors working on the maintenance of read more

I’ve just been in an ISDN VO session doing a voiceover for a radio ad. I’ve always wondered what being one of the umpires at Wimbledon is like and this VO session gave me a chance to find out. Sort of… I was playing the part of an umpire at a tennis match. I was imagining how you’d find the right voice tone to deal with those spectators that call read more

Fax and dial voiceover

Fax and dial voiceover

 October 10, 2012
I was doing a voiceover for a radio ad in an ISDN session today when something unusual happened. I was asked to do something that used to be a regular thing but which I suddenly realised hadn’t happened in a long time.  During the VO session it turned out that the version of the script I had wasn’t the final signed off one. So the client asked me for my read more

I’ve recently finished recording a voiceover narration for a training project for staff who work at E.On. The whole idea of the project was to use a mix of animation and filmed live action together with my voiceover narration,  to help staff learn the most effective way to report broken items of plant – including leaking valves. When it comes to planning the repair for the item in question there’s read more

Voiceover pronunciation issue for HBO Netherlands

 September 27, 2012
I’ve just finished recording a voiceover for another on-line promo for TV channel HBO Netherlands. This time my voice-over is promoting the arrival of series three of Treme. It’s the TV drama that’s based on real life experiences of people in New Orleans struggling for survival after being caught up in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.  Of special interest to viewers in the Netherlands is the presence of read more

The post headline makes it sound like I’m using a pun to suggest that I’ve been doing voiceovers for ads for Heart radio stations. In fact I haven’t voiced any radio ads recently it’s all been corporate and narration voiceovers. Given the recent news stories about changes to the exam system in England one voiceover project I’ve been working on is kind of topical.  Michael Gove may have announced the read more

I recently recorded a voiceover project that consisted of emergency announcements to be used through the tannoy system on a large industrial complex on Teeside. The script included annoucements for various scenarios including chemical spillage and fire. The client wasn’t sure how the announcements would sound through the pa system – where they need to cut through the noise of this busy industrial site – so I recorded a number read more

Do Voiceover artists need a Neumann U87? (part 2)

What’s the best microphone for a voiceover artist? Can you only be taken seriously if you’ve got a Neumann? Do VO’s need a U87? If you’ve wondered about a career as a voice artist and done any research into the area then you’ve bound to have come across the name of German microphone manufacturer Neumann. In particular it’s likely that you will have seen the U87 cited as “the” mic read more

Voiceover for dentists

I’ve recently finished recording a voice over for a project that provides information on the various laws and legislation that apply to dental clinicians.  While I was recording the voiceover I found out that in addition to all the employment law and health and safety rules that probably apply to any small business there were a couple of other items that surprised me. For example there’s a whole host of read more
